the first part sounds pretty good (what I assume is the cab sim'ed sound), the next one is harsher(sounds like nasty solid state clipping), but doesn't seem exceedingly so (probably my ears seem to have lost a bit of top end though).

Sounds good to me, but my ears are not the best after years of gigging.
It is a bit difficult to compare the 2 parts because of the digital clipping of your sound card, unless that is how it actually sounds coming out of your distortion pedal. If that is the case then it is certainly doing a very god job cleaning the signal up.
