From what I remember, it's a germanium based OD that was built into the Fargen JW-40 amp as the OD channel and it was going to be offered as a pedal. That was a year or more ago. The ToneQuest Report article can be found here starting on page six.

Thanks for the link Rotagilla... interesting read.

I like the quote: "We found some pedals that get that sort of Distortion, and I came up with a circuit".

Of course it's an original design. It's only by sheer coincidence that it has a similar layout and design to an existing effect.

I had some of that once, then I listened to some Coil and we had a magickal experience together; me, and the colors that what I saw shining outside the windows and it all sort of drifted away and there was only space and... something.

Yeah, not very often you find the magic pot. [smilie=a_dreaming.gif]

Well, after reading the article, my guess is that it's something similar to an Ibanez OD-850/Big Muff.
A Big Muff filled with Magic Pot; I think I repaired one of those last weekend... it certainly smelled like it!

Oh, and that crap about having the Ge diodes hanging outside the chassis to keep them cool is stupid, and his excuses about mounting the circuit in a separate box as being "too expensive" is also stupid. All the problems he discussed could have been easily solved in a much more professional manner. Looks like another bootweak kludge-job to me.
Seriously, this is supposed to be a high-dollar fancy signature model boutique amp, and he's complaining about the cost of a DIN connector? That's weak.

The whole David Gilmour part of the story certainly points in the direction of some kind of Muff thing.

I had some "magic pot" once (or was it twice???)
All I could remember was not being able to stand up for at least an hour - my legs had turned to jelly - sigh :)

Saw if for sale. Thought about it but with the bad economy and all...

At least we can marvel at the outside of the magic pot. All hail the magic pot!

So, almost six years later I finally got to play a JW-40. The amp itself is pretty awesome, the best Deluxe Reverb you've ever heard but on steroids. The owner let me take a peek at the insides and here's what I was able to get about the OD circuit. It's two circuits joined together, the boost comes from an older GGG MXR MicroAmp layout (verified against a saved file) which was mated to what I think was an older GGG MXR Distortion+ layout (I'm not sure on this one, I couldn't find a corresponding layout in my saved files but the layout was extremely GGG-ish). I question whether or not it was a D+ because the OD was very dark, so dark that I ran the tone all the way up and it was still a little dark. The "special pot" is a dual-gang C50K that controls the gain. I was unable to dissect the amp but did grab this pic...

Sorry I couldn't get more info but at least we have more than before.
