the clips, the fact that it's gated, and that it's IC based with no diodes, makes me think that this thing is comparator based. kind of like the craig anderton comparator or "triggered square wave" fuzz that was from an old magazine article. the funny thing is, i was actually designing something for bass a while back that was based on an extended version of the anderton circuit that could totally get those tones. it was really the first thing that i ever tried to "design". i was using transistors and a single op amp, but that tl074 looks like it could probably do the job with much less components. i totally forgot about that! looks like i might have a little project to work on!

well, i've got a preliminary schem done up. it's basically a bootweekers dream- just a bunch of different circuits slapped together right now. i'll really get down to brass tacks as soon as i get my new breadboard in the mail. my old one is all filled up with other projects.

it uses a max1044 to get +/-9v ti the comparator circuit, and at the moment has an internal dipswitch for different clipping characteristics. i don't think it's going to need an actual tone control, as gooseing the input of the comparator circuit is what gives you that difference between synthy and fuzzy that you see in that bassfuzz.com video. i also added a JFET buffer stage for a blend pot after the initial booster so that you 'll be able to also use it as a MOSFET booster(no crackle! ) when blended totally clean. all this is rounded out with MOSFET polarity protection and power filtering.

Okay I understand about 23.376% of what you just said!

But I love it just the same. 8)

From what I remember when I opened my friend's Brown dog, It uses a TL074 with 5mm yellow leds for clipping (these are on the pots board).
The circuit looks a bit strange to me but I'm not a big fan of clipping opamps for disto/fuzz. The two clipping options involve a resistor in serie (1k) with
the LEDs for the low clipping option.

fyi- comparator circuits don't sound anything like your normal rail clipping op amp. they basically just totally square off the wave and sound really synthy. and yes, there could definitely be clipping from LED's in the BD, but there are 4 op amps in that TL074, and that gives you a lot of options to mess with. so it could have a comparator in it as well. the thing is, this comparator circuit needs +/-9v, or an on/off switch due to it's floating ground, so one way we could find out is if it has another chip for the +/- supply. who knows, i could be way off here, but either way, i think this work-alike should end up being pretty cool. we'll see!

I have more somewhere in my computer but I'm not at home right now.

The first stage is just like the Agent Funk, so you could connect the two using this preamp for the envellope detector of the AG, no +9/-9v but the classic V/2 and clipping by LEDs (not in the feedback loop)
nothing complicated but I was not so pleased about the sound and the clean and dirty volume controls are a pain to use, at least for me.

All the pots are A100k.

I will try to make a schem when I will be back home at the end of the week.

But don't let RnFR stop halfways in the design of a comparator-based bass fuzz

Which one will be first to post a schematic ?
I only give negative feedback.

i can post a schematic, but it hasn't even been up on the breadboard yet so...

i have messed around with the main parts of the circuit already, but i'm kind of waiting until i get my new breadboard in the mail to do this one up. my other one's all filled up with crap i haven't finished yet. it's just like me to start another project. :D.

Schematic please!!!

I am making a bass fx thread and would love to p[ut that there.

Ill take the time to make a pcb layout too. :)

i'll put it up when i get a chance. many of the values still need tweaking for optimization, but all of the main parts are there. i've got a pcb layout started as well, but it's kind of pointless to finish it until i get the circuit done. i'll give you what i've got so far anyway though.

Both this guy and the agent 00funk have some link jack or envelope jack to connect the 2.

Wondering if I might tryo to make both in one box and footswitch the "link" ability

alright, alright. for that i gotta give you somethin!

here's what i have. of course it is totally unverified, and cobbled together in total solder-jockey style, but when i had most of it happening a bit ago, it had the potential for nailing the tone- and it gates!

so here are the warnings- all of the values may need adjusting, and it very well may need some filtering and series resistance to tone things down a bit. also, the power and blending schemes are totally untested.

but here it is, warts and all- you asked for it!
