There are a few improvements that can be easily made to this circuit:

Make R3 a 50k or 100k pot in series with a 10k resistor - this will give variable sensitivity / distortion.

Put a resistor in series with the diodes - 1k up as high as 10k - which will further soften the nature of the clipping.

Increase R1 & R2 to (say) 680k each to reduce loading on the guitar.

Add a simple tone control and output level control to the outside of the box.

Switch the power by using a stereo socket to remove the need for an extra battery switch.
