There´s a sucker born every minute - and too many of them end up in the bootweak pedal biz.

For the reason that the schematic is floating around I gave him the name "old dog". Thanks for the link !

The "swell" circuit is the entire fuzz circuit from the 1969? 1970? article by Antony Leo, minus an output cap. This circuit has a variable DC output level. It works best on the input of direct coupled tube amps, and works questionably on other kinds of amps.

My reversed schematic of this pedal was in the first schematics archive on the net, from the late 90s.

Seems I remember people saying the Swell would only work well if you had a really good battery in it or a power supply hookup.

You won´t believe it, but as you can see here:

it seems that even prescription electronics already has "gone to china".

If you like you can by this broken unit here for further investigations:

If the seller is who I think, they used to have a funky little store on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood. Unfortunately he was one of the most recent victims of inflated rents and Guitar Center being one block down. Cool stores are all but gone in the L.A. area. Ever since Black Market Music closed it's been all downhill.

Truth.

I LOVED Black Market Music. Fun place to "dig around", and the guys there were cool.

Future Music was good too, but BMM was a great place.

A couple of the guys opened Primitive Sounds in Burbank. I pulled a treasure or two from Black Market, but when I think about the things I passed on...
:slap:
The one that haunts me the most was a refined '53 Tele. I had just move to L.A. when I saw it and the job situation was really bad. He was asking around $3200. That guitar sat there for years. During that time I had built a relationship with the owner. I came in one day and the Tele was gone. We got to be talking about it and I told him how much I had wanted it but i was afraid to ask if I could make payments on it. His reply..

"You should have asked me, I would have done it for you."

That was me. Well, could have been someone quoting me.

When I reversed the unit, probably a decade ago, I found that problem, came up with a fix, and offered to give the fix to Prescription. They declined, saying that they had already fixed it.

i got a chance to use a very early unit like the red swirl one pictured.
i toured with it for like a month, comparing it to other fuzzes on stage. the fuzz portion when not using the swell feature was less than satisfying to me. brittle, not much sustain, kinda like a bad Si fuzzface sound.

the swell function was hard enough to dial in that i couldn't be bothered with it onstage.

I used to have the plain purple one. The swell definitely needs a fresh battery to do much. If I remember correctly everything was mounted to the pcb and when one of the switches went bad it was a real pain to open and get at. I liked the fuzz on it, maybe a tad muddy.
