Darkglass - Tone Capsule [schematic]
- george giblet
- Resistor Ronker
I checked the circuits using a python script.
I attached the python script as a pdf. It's pretty rough but does the job.
The results seem to match spice (frequency, dB)
# verify 1kHz 12dB
# results:
# 975 12.496385024
# 980 12.4968431225
# 985 12.4962321445
# darkglass tone capsule 500Hz 12dB
# results:
# 500 12.2289492459
# 510 12.2473715027
# 520 12.2471385698

Loving this thread. Made an account just to ask some questions. Looking to translate this to a board layout so I can built a clone or two, but I am missing some information; maybe y'all can help fill in some info? I will post my board design once it's done, of course.
From the thread, I pulled some capacitor values, but even on this list I'm not confident of all the values:
C1 22n
C2 22n
C3 120n
C4 22n
C5
C6
C7 1.5n
C8 8.2n
C9 47n
C10 47n
C11 electrolytic?
C12 electrolytic?
C13 electrolytic?
C14 electrolytic?
C15 electrolytic?
R-values all seem filled in, so no big deal here.

Hi everyone,
first let me say thank you for all the work you've done up to now. You are awesome!
I got my hands on a Tone Capsule recently and had the opportunity to make some in-circuit measurements of the caps without any pots being connected. This version also has 5.1kOhm resistors for R15, R19 and R20
Note that these measurements may not give the 100% correct values, since sometimes there are other components in parallel. Nevertheless the rest be easy to figure out.
So here is what I've got:
C1 25n
C2 25n
C3 110n
C4 220p
C5 68n
C6 10n
C7 1.55n
C8 100n
C9 55n
C10 55n
C11 1u
C12 12u
C13 12u
C14 10u
All caps a ceramic btw.
Cheers!

Awesome!
yeah, I havent done any work with smd yet. This one may have to wait till I gain more knowledge. Not sure of the smd sizes, polarity and the diode. i noticed through holes in one of the pcbs. Is that so you can do 2 layer?
Yes. these are so called vias, that connect multiple layers of the pcb. In this case top and bottom layer.
Yes, it's just for polarity protection. I chose a 1N4448, just because it was available at the supplier without any delay. Any general purpose diode with at least 18V would fit, I think.
I have received my boards and most my parts, waiting on the IC. They took a minute to find with all the shortages. Hopefully they will be here tomorrow. I’m going to start populating the rest of the board this evening. Out of curiosity, what were the board dimensions for those who had theirs made? Oh boy, smd. Let the fun begin.
I'm trying to create a PCB and soldering it with standard THT components. For the IC i will use a MC33179P which is the DIP-14 version of the SOIC-14 MC33179DG. Since Slade had already build a functional version i will use his capacitor value but here is the thing: C13 is a 22uF capacitor but for a THT build it could be only an electrolytic capacitor (i can't find any ceramic or polyester capacitor with the standard 5 mm legs spacing), can someone help me to find out where need to be the + and the - ?
Thank you!
