I apologize if this is in the wrong forum... I'm unable to post in the Power forum.
I'm wondering if the diodes in the voltage doubler circuit shown here act as reverse polarity protection as well.
(Actual 'doubled' voltage is closer to 16V)

No, these do not act as reverse polarity protection.

If you want to protect the 470u cap and the 555 IC from reversed power, you'll need an in-line Schottky at the point circled.
