When I try to update my email address, I get the message "The entered email address is already in use.".
I don't really see how that can be true, and I may well lose the use of my original email account soon, because it belongs to an ISP I am no longer with.

I caught this a bit late -- let me know in pm what your new email address is, so I can check other accounts...

My mistake. It seems I did register with that other email address, under a different user name, in 2014. I've just found a note I left to myself saying that I couldn't log in again, and couldn't reset the password (in 2015, I think) because the reset link was sending me invalid passwords, at the time - the password system requires mixed case, and digits, but the "forgot my password" emails sent all upper case, invalid passwords. My solution was to give up and register this newer account, with a different email address.
So, I've now recovered that older account, which had exactly one post, and changed its email address so I could then change the one for this account (with a few more posts) to use that one again. It's only taken me ten years to figure this out, but mostly because I'd forgotten what happened
