I built an EQD Crimson Drive version 2 clone three years ago
using a PCB I developed myself.
I used a BFW12 JFET, the pedal worked well.

I forgot to mention that the source resistance must be found new each time due to the large variations in the JFET parameters.
Select the value of the source resistance so that approximately half the operating voltage can be measured at the source pin.
