I got such a big headache a year ago when attempting to work myself through a batch of GE transistors because of all "false" readings when measurung hfe, I built a tagboard rangemaster setup. Generator in, scope out, and a small python script that made a sweep through the AF range while measuring the amplitude on the scope and then calculating the amplification.

That's a smart solution man!! I take it that worked pretty well for ya. You could also weed out the noisy ones that way too no?

I did not really test for that but tit would be a matter of adding some auible monitoring and you could tell straight away.
