Apparently the issues started around 16th of November. Didn't have the time to parse the server logs, yet. The PHP documentation website had similar issues, so I'm starting to see conspiracies

On 7 December, around 16:55 UTC, response was VERY slow, on the order of 100 seconds and more for the landing page and for every subsequent page (login, etc.) I eventually got a 504 error after 4 or 5 pages and gave up. It's fine now with normal response times at 20:00 UTC.

Interesting. Still had no time to parse the logs, but I replaced the included captcha with hCaptcha (a couple of days ago), and, since then, the server is a lot more relaxed CPU, load, and disk transfer-wise. Also memory, but the improvement is not as significant. Which seems to point to the registration form as the cause for the server load
I tested the registration with a throwaway e-mail and it seems to be working, although I can imagine folks with motor impairments having issues with hCaptcha. Oh, well...
The most striking improvement is the disk transfer, which plummeted to more reasonable values.

with firefox i use the "dark reader" extension, but since two days ago it doesn'twork on this site (and only on this site).
It seems that this problem is related to the "vintage" board style that i'm currently using. if I switch to "modern" or "boutique" everything becomes dark as it should.
Not a big issue, i know, i've already written the solution, but i wanted to report anyway.

Thanks for the feedback. The problem with phpbb layout themes is that structural updates are not always available in the specialized layouts, that layouts are no longer updated. Also when designing your own, you need to update it with any software update.Intripped wrote: ↑08 Feb 2025, 01:03 with firefox i use the "dark reader" extension, but since two days ago it doesn't work on this site (and only on this site).

Why are you using this extension? Just to have a black background, or also for its security functions?
It seems others are also experiencing problems with certain applications...

I'm using it just for the black background, I didn't even know that there are also security functions.
I've switched to modern style, so no more issues.
thanks for the reply!

Just a little update: I've encountered the same issue on a couple of other sites as well, so definitely there's a problem with the "dark reader" extension for Firefox.
I've also noticed that for this extension there has been an update on Feb the 7th, that corresponds to the beginning of the problem.
Hopefully they will fix this bug soon.
