Thanks for the layout Torchy! I may well be using it soon.
Knocked this up less the Tone control and with a Marshall tone stack. Was liking the results.
Warning: I do swear in this video.

I just built the BOR on perf using madbeans layout, and I have a question... I have to crank the volume up at least 3/4+ of the way to get it to unity gain (had to use a B100K rather than an A100K volume pot), and it doesn't get much louder than that on full. Does this sound right? Not that I'm expecting a huge volume increase or anything.
Here are the other parts substitutions I had to use:
R4/12/15: 4K7
R11: 150R
D1: 1N4001
Would any of those have much effect on the tone?

No, that does not sound right. If i recall correctly, i am using a linear volume pot in mine too, and unity on my build is somewhere like 9:30-10:30. Re-check all of your resistor values and other components, you may be shunting the signal someplace and not getting the "full effect".Mr. G. wrote:I have to crank the volume up at least 3/4+ of the way to get it to unity gain (had to use a B100K rather than an A100K volume pot), and it doesn't get much louder than that on full. Could it possibly be one of the transistors? How do you check the voltage on them? What should the voltage readings be on them?
I'll be sure to recheck the rest of the components values when I get back to it.

Hi,
My first post here!
I have just attempted to make a Box of rock with the layout from Torchy.
It does work but doesn’t sound right... with the volume and gain up full its just under unity gain, if I reduce the gain at all it loses alot of volume and if I reduce it some more the volume sharply drops off to nothing.
It kinda has a dying battery sound to it as well? (my batteries are fine)
Like Mr. G. I was wondering how you check the voltages on the transistors? And what should be happening?
Any help would be much appreciated
Thanks!

about the BOR, which schematic is verified?? coz i m excited to build one and wat is tat the schematic contain a boost section? wat is it?

The schematic in the first post is right and verified. I made a pcb layout form it and sounds great!
There's also a schematic for the boost section, wich is a super hard on.

the boost section is combine with the BOR or is different thing?
- chris_d
- Solder Soldier
The boost section that is in the BOR is a separate effect, basically a modified Super Hard-On, placed in series after the distortion circuit. I built an SHO separately before i built the BOR, so when i did this one i only built the distortion circuit.darrenbkl@gmail.com wrote:the boost section is combine with the BOR or is different thing?

except with a lower input impedance (1.1M) so that people will keep on buying the SHO.
In this layout, which is the cathode/anode for the diodes? Does K mark positive or negative?
Thanks, i'm currently putting this together and the layout is great!
K is for cathode, which is the 'negative' terminal of the diode, it is marked in the body with a color band.
The Freestompboxes Forum search function is soo great, use the search function..., the S E A R C H function.

I did madbean's version of this circuit - but I'm not sure....
Is C8 polarized?
If so, which direction does it go?
What can I use instead of BS170's?
Would a 1N4001 work for D1?

Yes c8 is polarized. The negative end should go towards the resistor R5(47k).jimosity wrote:I did madbean's version of this circuit - but I'm not sure....

I don't know of the top of my head on the BS170s, as they are real easy to get a hold of around here.
And i am pretty sure that needs to be the specified zener diode, as i think it is there for static protection or something along those lines? I don't recall exactly.

You can try 2N7000
You SHOULD use a 9.1v zener.

Yup, yup. It will work without the zener, but it will run a higher risk of blowing out the tranny. Suggest you socket that tranny just in case.

I've having problems sourcing the zener; what exactly is a part number for one that would work?
By the way; I got it up and running and it sounds pretty decent...but I'd rather have the right diode in there.

1N4739A is the 9.1v zener. You might get lucky and find them at radioshack. I have gotten the 5.1v ones from there before. Otherwise, pretty much anyone will have them online, mouser small bear, etc.jimosity wrote:I've having problems sourcing the zener; what exactly is a part number for one that would work?

I built this version since I didn't really want the boost in mind.
It sounds awesome, very articulate and defined.
I had two questions; one - listen to my clip of the pedal below - does it sound accurate?
...and two, I see a lot of comparison to the BSIAB2, which I had wanted to build - but hadn't gotten around to it yet - if this circuit is so similar, is there any benefit to building the BSIAB2 as well or are they that similar?
Here's the clip I did from this schematic.
