hey guys,
I would love to do something other than handdrawn schematics, and do some nice looking ones like I see in the boutique section here. Does anybody know of any software for Mac OSX that is free or at least relatively cheap? I don't need to do fancy, just enough for overdrive boxes.

btw, if there is some for PC that is free and very(!) good, I'd like to hear about that as well, because I can run Windows on my G4, but would prefer just a Mac program.

There's a free version of Eagle, for Linux/XP/Mac: http://www.cadsoft.de
It's widely used in industry as well as universities etc.

That's pretty cool they have OSX support. Are the files platform independent? I would suppose they would be.

Ive downloaded it but I can't get it to install. I think it might be something with the X11 server. Please help

X11 is Linux emulator which allows you to use Linux software on you mac.
It should be part of your system folder, or check the mac website for update software.

i think this issue is moot nowadays. All the new macs are intel based. You could use parallel or bootcamp to load up Windows XP. I use parallel and while it's not good as native, it's not bad.

I wouldn't mind a dedicated mac schematic/layout software though.

you can also try crossover from codeweavers. its basically wine for osx and not as resourse hungry as parallels is . altho not everything works i have had good luck with diptrace and eagle.

i just downloaded crossover, and i have to say so far i am extremely impressed!! I mean really really impressed. It is not perfect, but it is faster than parallel that is for sure.

I am running
utorrent on it (superb)
express PCB (superb so far)
diy layout creator (crashes... i get an error)

I'll update this list as i try out more win xp programs

diy layout creator has a java version (beta i believe)that runs natively it runs on my mbp just fine. now if i can find a good spice simulator that runs natively.

the java version seems to be working, but i can't import or open any files that are from the site here http://www.storm-software.co.yu/diy/ind ... ct=layouts

Same for me on Linux : DIY layout creator Beta 2.0.1, used with JRE 6, doesn't want to open files
I says "unknown format" when opening a .diy file, and the library window stays empty.

Hint anyone ?

i would kill for an affordable schematic/layout maker, similar to express PCB but for the mac and make it super easy to go from schematic to pcb in a pinch. I guess there is no money for this kind of development.

what about eagle? it has a free version that runs natively now with no need for x11

i just didn't "get" it 6 months ago when i was trying it out. It didn't seem too intuitive too me. Maybe i should give it another try and more effort this time.

There's a new version of Eagle out for OS X. The recent versions don't need to be run under X11 either.
