BOSS DD2 or DD3 mods for tape echo sound

Hello friends
These are mods I have done on several customers Boss DD2 or DD3 pedals to obtain a more realistic tape echo sounding device.
naturally - only a tape echo sounds like a tape echo

, but these mods will certainly get you closer to a tape echo sound (without the noisy and inconvenient tape loops).

Please note these mods apply to the original DD2 or DD3 which used the 64 pin DIP controller IC.
If anyone is sufficiently interested, I will post the mods for the later model SMD postage stamp controller IC model.
Okay - here we go

1: replace R14 (33k) with a 10k resistor.
2: replace R33 (47k) with a 22k resistor.
3: replace C26 (1uf 50v) with a 10n film capacitor.
4: add a 100n film capacitor in parallel with the effect level potentiometer ( between pin 1 and pin 3 of the poti)
That's it

- all done

- plug your guitar in and give it a whirl

i have done all kinda crazy stuff to my DD3 ....eg bleed caps to an op-amp with clippers

Oooh, I'd be interested in trying this out on a friend's DD-3 (with their permission of course!), but I think the unit is pretty new - could you post the modes for the SMD version please?

It would be cool baja to brew your own. Lose that 4th knob, elevel, fback,delay time. Lose the mode knob, have it do up to a second maybe more. Implement the mods, improved buffer, readily available parts for a build. It might be a touch schematic but I would be interested in trying to build that.

Here are the mods for the DD3a model - the one with the 20mm square smd controller chip

1: replace R009 (33k) with a 10k resistor.
2: replace R056 (47k) with a 22k resistor.
3: replace C051 (1uf 50v) with a 10n film capacitor.
4: add a 100n film capacitor in parallel with the effect level potentiometer ( between pin 1 and pin 3 of the poti)
That's it - all done - plug your guitar in and give it a whirl

repeats get progressively less bassy and approach almost self oscillation at maximum repeat level - also the initial and successive echos have less high end - they no longer sound like they have just reflected off a hard sheet of steel

Wow, that sounds like fun! Now I wish I had one of those ...

Is there room to stuff another pot in one? If so, maybe a simple low pass filter(pot-cap-ground) might come in handy.

Thanks Baja ....i got my DD3 square chip much clearer repeats with your mod suggestions!! Used two diff value caps switchable

I kinda did way too many things before and got it all muddy and dark ..

To answer my own question, yes, it would work and does sound quite nice

The numbers are different:
DD2 | DSD3
R14 | R17 (same value)
R33 | R30; value is 33k (47k in DD-2)
C26 | C25 (same value)

This is very cool.

I've seen the capacitor-across-the-level-pot mod before--what do the others do? I'd like to make this switchable and I probably can't fit a 4PDT in the Boss enclosure.
