Question about Tap Delay Pedals

My question is, how delay pedals and boutique delays etc. Send the tempo to the delay. Mainly how does it do the subdivisions etc. I'm interested in trying to replicate subdivisions in an external tap tempo pedal for pedals that have tap tempo inputs but no subdivisions. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
