Suggested Reading Material for Novice

Ok, you got your soldering iron and nothing is going to hold you back, but you have no clue where to start or what to build. There were others before you with the same questions... read them first.

Hello. I just discovered this fantastic site last week. I am extremely keen to get started on some stompbox building but am a complete and utter novice. I only have the loosest grasp of how to read schematics and the only wiring I have ever done before is installing new pickups.

I would be very grateful if somebody could suggest a book or website that gives the absolute basics (like how to read schematics) and, if you have the time, an idea of the equipment I will need, to get started.

I'm a boost/OD/fuzz kind of guy, rather than extreme modulation type effects, so the projects I particularly want to have a crack at are the ROG Omega and ROG/Homewrecker Multi-Face. In the fullness of time I'd like to build a Rat type pedal and, possible, a Big Muff/Pete Cornish G2 type effect. However, if anybody wants to warn me off the first two in favour of something else as my first couple of builds please let me know.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome. When i started I had even less experience in electronics than what you just stated. Stick with it, it'll get easier and make a lot more sense with some time and dedication. And never let non-working builds get you down. It happens!!
I too am a fuzz guy. Haven't build the first 2 projects you mentioned but I have built a Rat and a few Big Muffs so far. I recommend checking out madbeanpedals.com for lots of good projects! He offers a pete cornish G-2 board (darkside) and a rat clone(slow loris). Check it and join the forum board over there. We can help you sourcing and getting your first build together!
Also if you like fuzz there are a lot of really easy vero layouts for classic 60's ripping fuzzes! And step by step picture tutorials for how to complete a vero board. I can point you in that direction if your interested!
Good luck and don't give up!

Hi I was looking for a good fundamentals book for electronics that would be good for stompbox/amp making, although I have built some boxes and understand some of the building blocks of circuits I still don't completely understand some fundamental concepts such as biasing and positive/negative grounding and bipolar power supplies. Can anyone suggest a book for me please?? If i can get it in ebook reader format for my kindle that would be even better

Thanks!!! Richard.

There's a lot of material on the net and soon you'll be overwelmed, but take it easy and go to Geofex or AMZ or Beavis Audio Research and start reading.
Here you got the "Absolute Begginers" subforum and the "FSB Public Library"
Take look in the Board Index and enjoy it :thumbsup
