Hey guys I know its been a while since someone has posted on this. I built one of these and it works amazing sounds so good. I recently built another one the same way and the gain stage is really acting funky. As I turn the gain up the volume decreases and around half way and up if you play through it there is a really "farty" sound coming out of it. I checked all the solder joins and they look good. But I can't seem to figure it out. I don't even have to have the pedal on to have it affect the sound. It still gets farty. Any help on troubleshooting would be great! Thanks!

If it sounds too farty you could have made a mistake with one of the capacitors , probably way too big .
Check it again.

ALSO check the wiring to the dual pot...from your description, a couple wires may be crossed. some of the layouts floating around aren't really clear, so check it against the schematic, cuz that i know IS right 100%

Yeah all of the caps are good. I went over those like crazy. I know I redid the gain pot, but I did just redo it to the layout thinking I just did it wrong the first time. The first thing I noticed was a backwards diode. I stupidly put one of the 1N34A's backwards, I fixed that and thought things would be fine and dandy, but same problem as before. I also changed out all the IC's thinking maybe having the diode switched that I fried something in the chip, but nothing there. But I will check the gain pot from the Schematics. Also I unplugged my guitar from the pedal as my amp was powering down and it gave a high pitched whining sound... I don't know if that is coming from the same problem but maybe that will help.

I figured it out there was jump between two traces! Whew glad it works now. This is really probably the best overdrive I have played! Thank you for your help guys!

awesome. it's easy to do, especially right where the b+ goes in. REAL close.

i wear two pairs of 2.0 reading glasses (hah, in series!!) to examine boards now...comes in handy!!

glad you're in business...it really is a nice sounding dirt box.

Built the klone and it sounds sooooo good. Played it in band rehearsal tonight and it really shined. Got lots of compliments tonight.

Voltages check out great: putting in +9.5VDC gives -9.4VDC at the charge pump inverter pin, and +17.8VDC at the boosted supply output. If anyone can use the layout, i'm happy to share.

where did you get this box?
painted it yourself?

Are there any changes to make if I replace ICL7660SCPA by Max1044CPA1120?

Where did you get the PCB ? seems really nice (love when pot are directly soldered on the PCB )

Would be possible to have the dimension of the PCB posted on the first post ? the scales represented on the sides are in inch or cm ?

Hello everyone, I have been reading this thread for months and finally got around to building one of these, but have not had much luck getting it to work properly. I have read through this thread a LOT, but unfourtunately it didn't help me debug my build so here I am.
I built the smaller version that Olegator had posted on page 20 with all part values from bajaman's V2 layout. The problem is that I get audio in bypass but I only get a clean boost when engaged, there is no gain whatsoever. The controls seem to work as they should... the tone pot adds treble, the volume works, but the gain just makes my signal louder without adding gain.
I have looked the board over for cold joints and bridges but it's all OK. I originally had this wired to a DPDT footswitch but changed that to a 3PDT thinking the switch wiring or the switch itself was the culprit, but still no gain. All of my diodes have the bands facing the + and I have also double checked all component values.
I used two TL072CN opamps and my charge pump is ICL7660SCPAZ. Supply voltage is 9.50v and I am getting 17.23v off of the second IN4001 diode. If anyone can spare some time to help out with this, I'd really appreciate it!

Here are my voltages:

IC1 (Top left TL072)

1 4.72
2 4.74
3 3.74
4 0.00
5 4.73
6 4.75
7 4.75
8 9.50

IC2 (Right side TL072)

1 4.72
2 4.74
3 4.74
4 -9.15
5 4.74
6 4.74
7 4.76
8 17.24

IC3 (ICL7660SCPAZ)

1 9.50
2 4.75
3 0.00
4 -9.15
5 -9.15
6 5.06
7 7.45
8 9.50

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help, and a big thanks to bajaman and everyone who contributed to this awesome project!

I would be checking your wiring of the ganged volume potentiometer - from what you are describing you are only getting the clean boosted section working and nothing from the distortion stage
Your Op amp voltages are correct - are you using the correct value resistors in the gain stage :?: (the one with the clipping diodes after it  )
I cannot vouch for other peoples layouts, but MANY folks have built my layout without any troble - check again :!:
cheers

Thank you very much for the reply bajaman. The layout I used is almost exactly the same as yours and I used the same values. I have been suspecting offboard wiring as well because with an audio probe I can hear the clipping all the way to the wiper on the volume pot. I use a test tone generator to audio probe because it's easier than playing.... maybe that's not a good idea.
I have my gain pot wired like this:

I don't have the 15k resistor in parallel to the 82nf cap either because I didn't see it listed on the V2 layout that I have, do I need it?
