short delay

Ok, you got your soldering iron and nothing is going to hold you back, but you have no clue where to start or what to build. There were others before you with the same questions... read them first.

Good day everybody..

How many milliseconds you can consider a short delay?

20ms?..30ms?...40ms..? 100ms? 200ms?

how you convert it into seconds?
thank you..

I think 'slapback' delay is maybe in the 50-100ms range?

under 10ms is difficult to hear when it's latency.

ms = milliseconds = thousandths of a second.

so 100ms = 0.1s.
Testing, testing, won too fwee

thank you for your opinion..

The diy rebote delay can do 300ms of delay i think..., is there a possibility to increase this more?...maybe to 400ms delay?

what part of the diy rebote delay pedal can modded to increase its delay range?

any suggestion?thanks..

The pt2399 type delays can do longer delaytimes if you increase the size of the delaypot. Sound quality does suffer though. It will becomes more grainy, and at much longer delays it sounds very bad - but also kinda cool... If you just want a little longer delaytime this could be the way to go. I think you could live with the sound it produces at 400ms. If you want 1000ms, look elsewhere.

If you want longer delays without the quality issues, I've read somewhere that you can use two pt2399s. I don't know how to actually do that to a rebote, but I'm sure there is plenty of info if you search around the internet.

The PT2399 is quite a limited chip (that's why it's so cheap). You can increase the delay a bit, but when you get to 400 ms it starts to get really distorted. The only way to get longer delays is to use two(or more) of them cascaded, but the quality will suffer. You can mitigate the worst of the noise and distortion by keeping the level of the audio passing through them tightly controlled - compress on the way in, and expand on the way out. Pre-emphasis and de-emphasis can also help, and you have to remember that the delayed signal is usually quite quiet compared to the straight-through signal - this will go some way to masking the worst of the distortion. The filtering needs to be done as the data sheet describes as well.
