5E3 deluxe with a 4ohm speaker

Hello. I have a self made 5e3 deluxe amp (2x6v6 push pull). I´d like a little bit more of sound power, and I´d like to try a 4 ohm speaker instead of the 8 ohm that I have. I´ve got a output transformer with a 8K on the primary tap and options for 4, 8 and 16 ohms on the secondary. It´s a 15watts OT. I´ve been looking for some information, but it´s all confuse. The questions are: Do I have to made any modification to the circuit to put the transformer and the speaker into 4 ohms? Do I need a more powerful OT? Does this modification give me more sound?. Thank you very much, and sorry for any mistake with my english.

Hi,
You won't gain anymore wattage by using a different imp speaker.
Any difference will be due to the SPL of the speaker you intend to use.

As to hooking it up,,A 4 ohm speaker uses the 4 Ohm tap. 8 ohm then use the 8 Ohm tap.
If you want more SPL from the same wattage Amplifier,,then use high end speakers or use a Quad box.
Hi SPL speakers can often be very bright and although they are extremely loud the the tone WILL change
and you can loose the warmth of the lower SPL speakers.

I have a Fane speaker and although it makes the Amp twice as loud I much prefer the lesser SPL drivers.

You will only know 4 sure by experiment. Phil.

Thanks Phatt. Althought I can´t have more power it´s very interesting the information about the spl. My amp is a little "dark", and I like the humbuckers sound, so a hi spl speaker could be a good choise. I´m going to look for a Jensen 8 ohm. Thanks

Its not spl you should be looking for its sensitivity. (which will result in higher spl) If you look at a greenback it has 97dB sensitivity for 1 watt @ 1meter. a vintage 30 speaker has 100dB sensitivity. as you may know a V30 is much louder than a greenback and its the sensitivity which causes this. If you want more output look for speakers with higher sensitivity.

Also remember, adding 3dB sensitivity will be like doubling the power of the amp. for example, a 100watt amp is only 3dB louder than a 50watt! not twice as loud as some people think.
