Bogen CHB-35 info

Hello Everyone,

I recently got a couple of old Bogen heads from a friend. One '61 20 watter with 6v6's this one has been re-capped and sounds really good.

The 35 watter however is needing some work. I have found schematics for one similar but not quite the same. So I'm trying to find a schematic for this one.

This is a Challenger 35 and has 2x7868's ; a 6c4 ; a 6eu7 ; a 12ax7 ; and a 6ca4. All the schematics I find are as above minus the 6ca4. Some of the cap values that are in it are not the same as on the schematic so I want to make sure I use the correct filter caps in this amp when re capping.

The schematic shows (and the amp has) a 40/20/10/10 uf multi cap can. However not all the legs are hooked up to something. Is this common? I guess I just want to make sure I'm hooking the cap can up correctly when I get a new as I have never wired up a multi can before.

All I've done so far to this amp is hook up a 1/4 " input and a 1/4" speaker out. It works and just sounds like it needs a cap job. With being only the second amp I've dug into I just want to make sure I do the right thing with the multi cap can.

Thanks for any help, and your time on this,

Travis

congrats on the amp! i've got three, and love em. i like the CHB-50 with 6L6GCs the best. have you been able to find the cans? i've got a 10 watter i'd like to do the same thing to.

I have found cans that are close, but not exact matches yet. What is in it is a 40/20/10/10 and Mojo supply, and Antique Electronic supply both have a 40/20/20/20 which is the closest I've found so far. Shouldn't be a huge sound difference I don't think.

forget buying a new can; get some of the panasonic eeu or eca series 450v electrolytics and wire them up point to point. really small footprint, incredibly reliable and they're very cost effective ($10 vs. a $30 can). you don't even have to remove your old can. our shop has been doing this a lot in older amps and haven't had a single complaint.

Hey jupagblkxten any reason for Panasonics? I am working on a Bell Sounds Pacemaker Pm20, which has some 2 tubular multisectionals underneath, and I will probably need axial rather than radial leads. Have found Vishay/,BC Nichicon and Lelon brands at Mouser. If the Panasonics are better than these, and if they come in axial, where can I get them???

Also, thinking of adding two barrier strips and stringing all the caps from one to the other and then back where they hook up. Seem like an idea to you?

Thanks!

we use them because they're cheap, they're rated for something like 10000 hours and they're really small. i've been able to fit them in a lot of really tight spaces where most other 450v electrolytics wouldn't fit. their only drawback is that the leads are somewhat short and they don't come in axial (that i know of). on some amps i've had to install terminal strips for the modification, but , to me, that's no big deal.

they've got them at mouser; that's where we buy ours from.
