ID this type of cap?

The local place I go to for about 90% of my parts.
Its a surplus electronics supply store. ( http://www.apexelectronic.com/index.htm )
Its like heaven on earth for me.

Its really a surplus store. They don't get their stock from some distributor.
They get all their stuff from things like : People cleaning out their garage. Companies liquidating stock, and such.

Anyway...
Often times they get odd looking parts there.

So here is a cap from my trip there today:

At first glance I thought they were wire-wound resistors until I saw no wire.
They behave like caps and they were in the capacitor section (being in the right section isn't always a guarantee there though).


So who can ID this cap?

Type, etc.

I got the value, 0.22uF.
I got about 200 of them.

It's probably some kind of Military-Grade Capacitor, sealed in glass to protect itself from the elements, but really I'm at a loss as to what it is, can't possibly be a varicap because the value is too high.... :hmmm:

Most likely.
They do have some high end shit there.

And some "mojo" stuff as well.

I'm interested in its composition and other technical/semi-technical info.

I can read 242 on it, is that right?
That means it is a 2.4nF :hmmm:

Thats 224Z on there.
My camera is not the best with small and close up items :(
And there are a few where the numbers have been partially rubbed off.

Wow...I did bother looking up that tolerance level.
+80%, -%20 ?

The 20 I tested were pretty close to 0.22uF
I think 0.208uF was the farthest out.

I got an amp building friend that says they are glass encapsulated ceramic.

They work fine.
I'm just a bit anal about my builds.
I like to know stuff like materials used, etc about parts I use in my builds.

I got these the same day. I think they look cool (4.75k - 0.01%):
(I like those parts that vary from the norm, visually, and Apex has a lot of that type of stuff)

Never seen resistors like that before......and look at the tolerance specs.... :shock:


If you can get them in a range of values you could really make the circuit boards small without resorting to SMD resistors.... :hmmm:

they look like ceramic. I've got some 470pF that look like that. Some GCB-95 wahs have caps in that package too.

re: the Rs, I've found some really tight tol. R in surplus, and mostly use them for reference vs. my LCR meter. One is an "E" tolerance (0.005%) 2kohm. It was just floating around in a bag of parts and I didn't know what I had 'til I looked it up on the interwebs (it actually did measure 2.000k ohms which was kind of neat and reassuring). My thinking is to get a tight tol. R for each range of the LCR meter (20ohm, 200ohm, 2k ohm range... etc.).

I would love to be able to get some more values with specs like that.
Problem is the place I shop is well...
You look for a value you want.
Find what will work because they might not always have the value you wanted.
Although when was there looking for some 10Ks, best I could find was 9.31K 1% metal film. Which would still put within a 10% 10K.
You find a nice value that will work and you either have 5 or 6 options on package/tolerance. Or you may only have 1.
So you take what you can get. Makes for kind of a more interesting shopping trip.
You never know what sweet piece of component wizardry you will find there.

I also have some 103 and 104 caps that look like a 1N400x. Except the ink has the resistor codes on them.
