Nothing. When engineers need something they go online and search for the first hit that tells them what they wanted to hear. After that, that's the truth.

hi

i want to follow up of this topic. i remove all the wima caps, and install panasonic metal film caps. it sound like guitar distortion pedal. but i compare it with original angry charlies. my angry charlies still bad than original. so i install back original evox caps. result is also the same. now, i quit sure the problem come from takman resistor. because i see some people compare resistor in gutiar amp. they say sound will hugh different. i never compare resistor in guitar pedal. so anyone try it in guitar pedal?

i see some pedal use carbon comp, carbon film and metal film. this is the type only. different brand also sound different, like philips resistor, it is famous.

do anyone can share it here

thanks

so have you compared your pedal with another one before you made all the changes? maybe you just got one that sounds bad.

I think it's funny that after changing everything back, it still sounds bad. not worse, not better. the expensive caps didn't make a difference.

I can't see how changing the caps could make the pedal sound bad, unless the caps were faulty to begin with, in what way does it sound bad?.....

if it's motor-boating like crazy then definitely replace all the caps with known good low-ESR types, and make sure you get the polarized-caps oriented correctly otherwise they'll go leaky.... :thumbsup

kwm488, which of your favorite guitar players went through all this time consuming bullshit to get their sound that you love? I'd like to see a list of famous guitarists who spent hours worrying about capacitor and resistor brands while they were recording all those sweet sweet leads which are now huge classics. Because no way is anybody doing this for their own sound. They're doing it to chase Gilmour or Trower or somebody else they put on a pedestal. Better to play more and solder less if you want to bring it like SRV

It won't. When changing all caps it may sound a little different but it will not make a good pedal into a bad one. Same for changing resistors, or opamps. Bear in mind the reason it sounds different is another discussion.
When changing caps makes a pedal from good into bad something else was changed that does have a major influence. As long as the topicstarter still resorts in changing everything instead of finding the exact cause for his sudden tone change there is little use in trying to help. Other than, and you've said it spot on Simon, inquiring what exactly does it sound like.

I'm not nearly as competent as some folks here, but I've played around with some pedals. And I gotta say that, given the quality of PCBs that most pedals have it would not surprise me at all if all this resoldering damaged the traces...

I have an idea... put it all back together the way it was or as best you can and sell it on ebay or CL...

Really no sense in reinventing the wheel... It's a CRUNCH BOX... So why don't you just make your own copy of a copy of a copy of a crunch box and build your own from scratch? You obviously have all the parts and then some... so etch a board or get a vero board or better yet get a bread board and satisfy your "OCD" with different caps, resistors, op-amps to your hearts desire... If you want to make a difference or improve the CB why don't you try different diode clipping configurations like in the 2nd op amp feedback loop? Or, a single 2N7000 or BS170 for clipping diodes etc..? Tone Freak Severe sounds better than the traditional cruch box anyway in my opinion... basically the same thing but different clipping configuration...

I think I would have to say that you have more than likely put a wrong value resistor in there somewhere , ie mixed up your resistor values (or cap values). You could change every passive component for different makes but of the same value in any pedal and the basic sound of the pedal would hardly have a decernable sound difference.
Check your soldering for bridged tracks and dry joints as well.
It's fairly straight forward, if you want to start it , press start. You can work out the rest of the controls for yourself !

No silicon heaven ? preposterous ! Where would all the calculators go ?

wima or evox , which one is better for pedal effect?
There will be no difference at all. Use whatever fits in the board and whatever looks nice.
kwm488 wrote:upgrade the high grade resistor will sound better?
It will make no difference at all.

All passive components of the same value used within their voltage ratings make no changes whatsoever. You're just wasting money buying "high quality" or "audiophile" components. They are just more expensive to take money from the gullible.

Mic,
Read the whole thread ;). You'll notice the guys don't listen at all and just ramble on about their "improvements". It's changing components for the sake of changing them but without any goal of what to achieve.
Sorry. Plain out of planes.
