Anyone knows what happens inside one of these. I heard they should be like original Ramshead muffs, but that is all......... Should be killer on bass :)

Its a Muff built on a GGG board. I dont know if there have been any value changes, or which muff version its based on though.

I would like to know about this as well.

I sent the S&S myspace a message asking if they would share some of the build info with a DIYer. They said yeah and for me to call them but I accidentally deleted all the messages in my inbox and lost the info. I tried getting in touch with them again but with not luck.

I'd really like to build one of these.

Thanks!

I just put this together from the pics. A lot is unknown (cap size for example) but I think most is known.

I know GGG makes these guys on their BMP PCB for the guy who sells the Blue Beard. Does anyone happen to know what kinda mods are done to the BMP to get to this point?

Here is a link to a guy giving a demo:

Here is what GGG say's about the "Tuned Version:"
"There have been some misunderstandings about this version. GGG is involved with building a pedal by Sandford and Sonny called the Blue Beard bass distortion. This "Tuned Version" is somewhat simialr to the Blue Beard, but it is not a Blue Beard. It sounds somewhat different and it is in a smaller box of course. This is an excellent distortion for bass or guitar or synth, but this project should not be considered a kit for a Blue Beard pedal."

They aren't built on the GGG PCBs that GGG sells. They are made on a nonmasked wider board. To me the big difference between the BB and a regular muff is that the BB actually does a pretty cool low-gain muff tone while other muffs usually sound like crap without the gain pretty high.

The one I had was made on an old GGG board.

Really a normal Muff; couldn't read most cap codes as they were crossed out.

Schematic-y

Bloody hell, reminds me of Sanford Clark and his great record Son of a Gun, produced I think by Lee Hazelwood, what a coincidence!

Using an existing PCB, and crossing out the cap values so you can sell it as your own? :slap: Well now I really want to know what's under the hood! I couldn't care less before.

JD Sleep builds the blue beard so hes really crossing out cap values on his own board. Sonny just sells them.

i bought the old muff kit a couple of years back and its the same board as the blue beard. i'll see if i can dig it up but there was a pretty big discussion about this on some bass players forum and someone had the sony and ggg and debunked that there wasn't any difference between the blue beard and the ggg tuned version except that the blue beard has some power supply filtering. if you have one of the old ggg boards there are already holes on the pcb for this. i did it to my kit and IIRC it was just a 100uf cap and two 4k7 resistors or something along those lines. i'll see if i can find that page.

Yep, we got to the bottom of it on TalkBass. It's pretty much the same thing.

Almost identical to the GGG tuned Muff, even if they claim it isn't. There's a thread on talkbass.com comparing the two with good quality pics of both.
