Hiya - is there any difference between these. Looking to build a Formula No. 5 and I have some 1n4004 lying around, but parts list asks for 1n4001. Cheers

The 1N4001 and 1N4004 have the same forward-biased voltage (0.6 V), where they differ is in the PIV (Peak Inverse Voltage) rating, the 1N4004 has a higher PIV rating than the 1N4001, you can easily use a 1N4004 in place of a 1N4001 with no problems..... :thumbsup

Just to add to what the good Doc said:

1N4001 are rated at 50v (PIV), 1N4002 at 100v (I think), 1N4003 at 200v (I think), 1N4004 at 400v (I know), etc, up to 1N4007 (around 1000v).

I used to know the series off by heart, but it's been a long time and the data has faded in my grey matter.

So, in conclusion, and confirming the Doc's prognosis, you can always use one that has the same or a higher part number than the one specified in a schematic.
