I think the big reason is that it is easier to source/build out the charge pump portion of the circuit (and run it off of a standard 9V-12V barrel supply) than it is to build the transformer version and wire in a fixed power plug.

You've done a commendable job tracing out the larger/original version (I took multiple high-res shots of both sides of the board of my previous one before selling it), but the other complaint folks have is the size. I never used the Boost on my stock one, so when I built out the DIY version, I just have on/off and crunch/high gain footswitches. Works fine in that config, in a Hammond BB-size turned sideways.

I did the same thing with the AC-Tone too.
