"Fake" 2n5457
- LooseCannon
- Solder Soldier
Since the 2n5457 has went out of production and the usual parts websites don't stock them I looked for some on ebay.
So there are plenty over there, for example: https://www.ebay.com/itm/20PCS-2N5457-2 ... 27e547dbde
I remember reading about fake IC chips and was wondering if it's possible that these 2N5457 are fake??

Why not just use another jfet?
Also, tayda is still stocking 2n5457: http://www.taydaelectronics.com/catalog ... t/?q=2n545
I'm happy I bought a couple hundred a few years back, when they were only $0.07 a piece

Thanks guys.
I just placed a big order from Tayda two weeks ago and the 2N5457 were out of stock, but now I see it was only the Fairchild one, and the VISHAY one which I didn't notice is in stock
I know about the Chinese delivery times, sometimes it could take 1 week and sometimes 5, it's a gamble

I have to warn you. About a year ago I ordered a bunch of J201's from Tayda. What arrived were the counterfeit ones that have been documented on this forum. Personally, I wouldn't order from them again.
Q: How many bluegrass musicians does it take to change a light bulb?
A: Three. One to change the bulb and two to complain that it's electric.

So there are in fact counterfeit transistors out there? How can you take a fake one from a real one?
I couldn't find the threads you're talking about on the forum, could you post a link?

Sorry, it was in another forum... https://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/ ... ic=97600.0

the ones that turn up in google pic searches look fake. They haven't made for some time so they can't be "new". If they work fine though, (assuming the counterfeiter is just relabeling any gen. purp. transistor) maybe that means 2SC828 don't have special magical properties (for vintage fuzz, univibe cloning or whatever) and some ordinary cheap modern production transistor can be used.tabbycat wrote:i don't know about fake but i ordered 20x 2sc828 new from china
FWIW, the really old originals look like this:
http://userdisk.webry.biglobe.ne.jp/001 ... SC828A.JPG
the later ones lose the "katakana" lettering (IIRC) and the markings look neater. All should carry the pointy triangular Matsushita (now "Panasonic") logo. Also, (on the old ones but not the later ones) the leads seemed more pliable and "bendy". The body is sort of rounded on the edges also. (I know, "Who cares!", but maybe somewhat helpful if fixated with looking for "exact vintage original" type parts.)

So how can you tell fake transistors\diodes\chips from real ones other than how they look? By measurements? And if so, what do you need to measure?

There is no need or gain in faking a 2N5457 they are still available although not in the legged version, now only available as SMD. I use quite a few and bought a bag of 1000 T092 from RS Components before they stopped stocking them.
It's fairly straight forward, if you want to start it , press start. You can work out the rest of the controls for yourself !

Who would frigging bother faking a 10 cent transistor?nanodocl wrote:I can confirm they are fake

How so you "can confirm" they are fake?
Are you saying somebody scraped the surface and re-printed them?

I bought BF245 from Tayda and they work as they should... for phasers or TC distortion/boost switch system.
They do are FETs
Maybe learning how to use them before claiming they're fakes?

I have been ordering parts from Tayda for a few years now....
I have not had a problem with any of their parts except for the quality of the 1/4" jacks that they stock.

I haven't had any issues with stuff from tayda either. Also: They sell amp style jacks at half the price of the open socket version. I've been using those for years now, and couldn't be happier...

Just got ripped on eBay for some of these, the problem is $25 for me to return them:

eBay seller COUNTERFEIT PARTS

They sold me Fake 2N5457
They were (obviously) sanded down and re-stamped. Also out of spec, as I campared them to the other FETs I had
globeltrade 2N5457 COUNTERFEIT FAKE SANDED & RENAMED OUT OF SPECIFICATION FRAUD
Be aware though, that the next post on this thread may be them pretending to be a buyer who received good parts

Ok , all this 'these are fake' statements are speculation, How do you know they are fake ? Yes some parts might be but why bother with these as there is no real money to be made in a few Jfets. They are more likely out of spec. or also check the manufacturers datasheet (diff makers can have a different pinout).
I have a couple of bags of Jfets , about 1000 j201's and 800ish 2n5457's they are all hugely different with Vp and Idss and Gm and that is just how Jfets are.
you often also find jfets with a colour code to tell you which spec they sit in, ie GR,Y, R this type of marking was typical from the Japanese in the 80's 90's with an actual painted on colour code.
