The guys at Catalinbread are pretty cool and published the schematics for the pedal they just released, the Katzenkönig! Sounds amazing in the demos and is basicaly a silicon Tonebender with a Rat clipping and tone section, pretty cool stuff!

The schematics are in the end of the pdf, hope it's ok to post the link here!

The schematic doesn't specify the transistors...

From the look of it, there are four silicon transistors. A quick look suggests that lower HFE types would be best.... Try 2N2222 or BC107A for all of them.

yes, in the manual says it, they used silicon transistors, just don't specify the model. The folks at Catalinbread use a lot of 2n2222 and BC184, and I think any of those would be a good fit here!

Um...

The LED is backward in the schematic?

Oh Howard.

You ever gonna leave that grease pit and do what you do good for you?

At least the merkin fuzz and naga viper uses 2N222A's. They are low gain and they sound good in fuzz circuits.
Personally I would try some low gain NPN's; 2N3904 or BC-anything with A or B suffix.
The output buffer could be low noise high gain device for example BC549C / BC550C.
Any NPN should work though.

Here's a layout for this thing. You can board mount the pots from the solder side.

Hi.

I drew a quick vero layout and populated one prototype board yesterday. Can't wait to finish it this evening when I get home from work.
I used sockets for transistors and also for diodes so there is more room to experiment.

I will. I was going trough my transistor stashes earlier today and found a bag of 2N2369's that I didn't even remember having anymore. They sounded warm and overall great in all kinds of silicon fuzz circuits I built few years ago. Hfe's were something like 70-110. Gotta try them too.
I already spotted couple missing components from my layout, but fortunately there is space for them so I don't have to solder them under board and I can just modify my drawing rather than drawing a new one. One hour work left and then it's time the soldering iron get warm and beer get cool.

I built this but the volume is really low when engaged. Anyone else built this?

Cheers
Chris

Word has it that this pedal has an unusually high level of hiss. The schematic looks kind of crude, and like it would indicate as much. I don't expect quiet operation, but are there any changes to be made that might reduce any noise?

I'm talking about hiss - there seem to be a lot of reports of really noticeable hiss.
