Dunno if this has been mentioned before, but the 6-transistor "clean" section of the WH Pork Loin replicates the old Neve discrete amplifier circuits. Mr. WH must've figured out that they run on 9v without any modification. I would guess that JHS noticed this, grabbed the old Neve preamp schematics, and produced the Colour Box.
Sorry that I don't have a link available, but there should be full schematics of the Neve mic pre-amps available out there. Many people make clones of them nowadays.
Some notes:
The circuits in the Pork Loin have small differences. I don't know what they change.
Also, apparently the transistors should have over ~400hfe, if you're trying this out.
