I just tried the LFO part... My god! It's really great! So simple but works so nice, the 3 diodes makes the signal perfect for LED/Lamp drive. I will probably use it on MANY of my designs now. Highly recommended

This is a neat circuit. I'd like to try building it someday on a breadboard and experiment with different LDRs. I suppose optical phasers have a different tonal texture than jfet-based phasers like the MXR Phase 90?

Yes they do. I prefer optical ones generally.

The MXR Phase 100 is an optical phaser and its circuit is loosely similar to the Penrose design; it has additional stages and a different LFO but its use of LDRs is the same.
