I've already encountered the name in the earlier, equally puzzling Guitar Tripler project. But really, is this the guy who later started Small Bear Electronics?

Here the frequency response of this circuit found by simulation:

The 2N2924 can be replaced by the 2SC1815.
Edit:
The BC548C is the better choice.

I'm pretty sure it is... he's had a few projects published over the years
