IMHO, a small value resistor placed in series with the led would be good

I made this board layout considering the optinal series resistor before the LED as suggested by Ppluis0.
TR1 to TR3 could be BC548.

I'd be tempted to take my output off the collector of TR2 for all that gain and distortion

Hi Manfred,

According the schematic of a similar compressor posted at this link: viewtopic.php?t=31743 we can be sure that R7 value will be 470 ohms
