Here's a best guess schematic, no idea how the pots connect. Forgot the electrolytic from R5 to ground. :?

When I was drawing the schematic, the emitter/collector orientations really bothered me. If the above schematic is correct, the transistor pin layout is the rare CEB.
ECB Makes more sense, but then the transistors would be in "reverse beta" (http://www.muzique.com/lab/reverse.htm) configuration.

What do people think?

2n5172 in to98 may very well be in that weird pinout, I seem to remember that from Clyde McCoys, but I may misremember as that was decades ago.

2N 5172 are indeed ECB...
