Any idea whats going on inside this? It sounds pretty sweet to me

From the assorted things I've seen posted around the net, I'm pretty sure it's a PT2399 digital delay with some filtering to give it that "analog" sound. I'm not sure if it uses a compandor circuit or not, but I think it may because that's one of the elements that helps give many analog delays their signature sound.

ah I misread the description. I thought it said it was an analog delay, but it is an analog sounding digital delay. Thanks

Yep - it's something I worked out originally with Francisco of tonepad - it's that same type of circuit with a combo high/low pass filter off the echo's

Is this the same as the big lloyde dee-layer made by justin simpson?

sort of but not really. :D
Justin used to make effects under the name "big lloyde" a few years ago. I got to know him a bit and asked if he wanted to help me build things from time to time, as he is VERY meticulous and a just an all around great builder not to mention a super nice guy. Over the past couple of years I've gotten so busy that things have developed into a bit of a partnership.

The deelayer is based off of the same 2399 chip so yes, the circuits are going to be similar. If you download the datasheet for the 2399 it basically gives you the same schematic as what you download off of tonepad so in that regards, no one is really 'cloning' the tonepad delay... they are just building off of the datasheet as expected. The dee layer has more filtering and some part value changes to make it quieter, so we kept those changes but on the AE we added a filter off of the repeats in order to thin out the echoes a bit depending on where you set the tone control. some more values were changed at the in and out stages as well to limit the noise as much as possible and make the base tone as transparent as possible.

Hope that helps! :)

Cool and thanks for the response!

The only reason I asked is because I just bought an orange plextortion and it had justin's name inside and had the same type of look to the pedals with the vinyl decal. I'm very happy with both pedals and thought you might have a parthership of some sorts.

The main thing I like about Justin's delay is the fx loop. Can you get that on your delay as an option? all my friends like the dee-layer but are also excited about your new delay.

I also got your email today about the $110 cranked Ac. I was going for the plexidrive next but I might snap the AC up first for the money!

I can't do that to the AE, but shoot justin an email and he can hook you up with a deelayer, assuming he has pcb's left. He may be able to build something like the AE off of that pcb

Hi how did you design the tone knob??

It's simply a pot and cap to ground, but you can do a lot of different things there... I've though about doing a bigmuff type control there just to see how it comes out (for example)
If you are really wanting to build something, I'd check out the 'echo base' over at diystompboxes.com - you can get modulation with that schem and it's a pt2399 based delay as well.

where did you put the tone control.

did you place it before the input. or after the output?
