Small solid state amp opinions...

I'm thinking of getting a small 10-15 watt amp and wondered if anyone had any good tips (or links to a schematic
:P) on a cheap one that stays as clean as possible even when cranked ?? (a headphone out would be nice,but I could probably kludge one in at some point)
I'm tempted by one of the Orange Crush amps,,or maybe a Roland,at present...

If you want to play clean, you need more power to get the same volume as you would with distortion. 10W with distortion might be louder than 100W clean. Something to think about.
If you're looking for cheap and clean, I'd look at bass, keyboard, and PA amps.

I recommend the Roland Micro Cube for clean sounds and for a nice plexi distortion the old Marshall 12W mod. 5212 or a small Park amp.

if you want 10w, but to be clean when cranked, get 50 watts.

i agree with JHS the roland micro cube is a great cheap amp. i picked up mine shortly after they came out for 90 bucks, it was a floor model. the majority of my amps are low to medium power tube amps from the 50s and 60s and you cant beat the sounds i get out of them but the micro cube is an excellent amp. good variety of sounds and it is great for travel having the ability to use batteries or ac adapter.

You know, the Electro Harmonix battery operated Freedom amp is loud, loud, loud, and very clean, in my opinion. It's discontinued, but if you happen to come across one, you might try it and like it.

VOX Pathfinder 15R, maybe? Very nice sound. Not a lot of clean-clean, though. Beatles clean, rather. A lot of people on FDP (

Electro-Harmonix also sells the 44Magnum which is a small pedal but is actually a power amp. You can then add speaker and effects pedals as you go.Nice and organized if you dont like a pedal or speaker you can just flip it and move on without having to lose money by starting all over again with an amp.If I was too start again with amps and effects thats the route I would go.
