I absolutely love Tommy's playing, but I'm not crazy about his fuzz tone on his 2 solo albums. Does anyone know if this is the same fuzz that he used with Zephyr and Energy?

Tommy Bolin supposedly used an Astrotone, I traced one that I got in my hands for a time, It ios the only thing I have really given to this community. It's the same as the Samash Fuzz box, here is the link for the full project.

The magic fuzz tone comes from those old lense head trannies. I have a few of them, producing a very fat and middy tone and nearly no noise. TB played over a HIWATT 100 and most of his sound comes from the cranked amp not the fuzz.

Actually, when I had the chance to play the astrotone, it sounded to me more like a fuzzy treble boost than a fuzzed out sound. I thought the trebly sound was intended for the old reason of the amps being too dark sounding... etc. But now that you mention It was a Hiwatt, I don't know why would he want more treble.

Don't forget Tommy needed all the high end he could get. My favorite Ritchie Blackmore quote explains why:
Ritchie Blackmore on Tommy Bolin's guitar strings:
"When I heard that Purple hired him I thought it was great. He was always so humble. I remember he would always invite me out to his house in Hollywood to see his guitar. One day I went to his place. I walked in and tried to find him, but no one was around. There was no furnishings - nothing. I stayed there for ten minutes before he finally appeared. He showed me his guitar, and the strings must have had a quarter-inch of grime on them, as though he hadn't changed them in four years. I asked him when was the last time he'd changed strings, and he said very seriously, "Gee, I don't know. Do you think I should change them?"
How great is that.
