Cool. Well, that certainly is interesting. The op-amp would hit its limit driving that network once the diodes conduct.

I compared the mark 1 and mark 2 versions the of Lead 12 on this video, and explained the circuit differences a bit.

I realised there's something wrong here, sorry about that. You probably guessed it but "A"/Gain pot lug is connected to pin 5 of the opamp. It seems obvious but it doesn't show on the schem.
