Falling into the category of "pedals only Ron Neely has ever seen" would probably be the Sam Ash Fuzz-stainer. I picked one up at the Columbus, OH guitar show back around 1996-1998. It was in an MXR-sized box with 3 knobs: Drive, Tone, Volume. I don't remember the color but I do remember it had an adhesive label on the top w/ "Sam Ash Fuzz-stainer" printed on it. Unfortunately this was before the crazy vintage effects market and I ended up trading it off, probably for an EH pedal. Probably worth a fortune now.
Has anybody else ever seen one?

I've never seen one but I believe that the Sam Ash branded pedal was just a Shine-ei Companion with a different sticker. The only one I've seen a picture of was in the Shin-ei wedge shaped box, so maybe yours was different under the hood. This schematic looks like it might be the one you're looking for, layout is here and PCB is here. Obviously I can't be sure it's the same pedal but it is a three-knob Sam Ash branded fuzz so that's something. The name is different though, so who knows. Hopefully this is better than nothing...

From what I remember of the sound, it was nothing like the Sam Ash Fuzz Box or a Shin-Ei pedal..
Looks like Portland Guitar Repair is selling a clone soon (thanks discofreq for the link). I just emailed them for price, etc. Maybe their clone can be reversed for a schematic!

I have a schematic I drew from the unit I owned. I've sent it to Analogguru for checking and will post it when it's OK'd.

Don't know if the "fuzz-stainer" is the same as the "Sam Ash Fuzz" but the Sam Ash Fuzz (aka Astrotone) has been covered ad nauseum in the past. Plenty of schematics etc available on the net. I built an Astrotone a couple years ago.

It's a different circuit.

No word but here's the schematic anyway. Not verified.
I drew this from a sketch I made of the circuitry years ago.

Thanks for posting the preliminary schematic, theehman!
Hey... what happened to the schematic in this thread... any word ehman or AG?

I did a de-goop of a Fuzz Stang and it didn't match my schematic much at all. Either I'm out of mind (quite possible) or they made their own version with different values. I may have to post the schematic I did of the Fuzz-Stang.

I just read through a thread over at the DAM forum and there may have been different versions of the Fuzz Stainer. It would interesting to see your trace for the Fuzz Stang to see how it is set up.
