Thanks, Paul. I guess that it would follow that an inverting opamp clipping stage, which don't have the clean signal passing through AFAIK, would clean up better. Yes?
That's one of the changes being done for the new version, along with a bunch of other things.
Another way to make them clean up better, and to help cut back on the clean sound ridding in the mix, is to cut the lows BEFORE the opamp instead of at it's gain setting elements. Cutting the lows in front will reduce the input level to the opamp at those freqs which will reduce the odd effects due to phase shift and other things. It can have a little more noise though because the opamp would be running at much higher gain levels on the low freqs than the normal way of setting them up. It's not bad though.
perf layout for 1590b, verified by myself http://cfile25.uf.tistory.com/image/136 ... 9BB321540A
I use sockets for "clipping diode set"s so there appears only one diode on the layout for each clipping section but they are antiparallel pairs.

Thanks for layout Neil. Can you attach the file here on the forum in a separate post (in this thread)? That way, it won't disappear if the image host site has "technical difficulties" or whatever. Thanks.
Here you go! I didn't know I could attach files.
I haven't played it at gig level yet but I'm liking it so far. It doesn't sound like a rat at all to me. I didn't have a CA3130 at hand so mine has a LM308, which hopefully means there's room for improvement. It seems to be fair to comment after playing more with it louder, with a CA3130. But I still encourage you to build one and see, it's worth it I guess.

Can you also post the PCB transfer image? That appears to be a PCB layout and not a perf layout. I'm sure you could build on perf from that graphic, but it would be nice to have the PCB image as well.
Failing that, could you attach the DIY file so that one of us can do it?

An LM308 is completely different inside than a CA3130. I expect they would sound worlds apart. For one thing, the CA3130 is almost entirely MOSFET, whereas the LM308 is entirely bipolar transisitor.....

Whattt? Ah I hate it when I'm losing my mind...I just searched for it at mouser and smallbear and saw nothing--is it at either (both?) of those places and I'm just missing it??

You can get them from Allied or Futurlec. I recommend Allied if you live in the U.S. - excellent supplier! http://www.alliedelec.com

I'm using 3mm diffused RED LED.
It seem lose some PRESENT.
when shop for LED for clippers, Is there any particular parameter i need to look into ?
I don't use LED's as clippers, never could get any consistency out of them except for this bag of diffused green 5mm led's I got at Fry's a couple years ago. I thought they sounded almost as good as 4001's so I used that bag of LED as LED's, go figure.
Finished up this one a while ago. Highs seem boosted a bit too much. Maybe larger compensation cap would tame it? I don't know. Other than that, sounds pretty decent. I think I'm gonna let this do high-gain job for me for a while, instead of a LDO clone I've been using, which has less highs and more mids. And I recommend to try log taper for tone pot, that gave me better control.
