I had the same thing and noticed, that the collector of the second transistor was pretty low - starved transistor. So no problem, a trim pot in parallel to the collector resistor and bob´s your flaming uncle. This runs the transistor a bit hotter.
You have to find a sweet spot that does the farting so that is sounds to your like.
This is probably the fine-tuning R.G. mentions. Some transistors may work right away, but some obviously don´t. I used BC237´s that happened to rumble around the drawer
I like the sound of the fuzz.
