So I've just performed the surgery required to correct my layout @#$% up. Wow! The really good effect in there just waiting to get out has now been unleashed! Amazing, a very deep and chewy phaser. The Regen control and the Blend control have now totally come to life. The Regen self oscillates when it's maxed out, so I'm going to add a larger value resistor to set the maximum a little lower. The surgery wasn't fun, entailing making 7 little 'bridges' from one point to another. I'm not sure if it's going to be easy to amend the layout to take in the corrections without adding slightly to the board size. I'll have a crack at it anyway.

The corrections I made are within the areas inside the black circles, entailing cutting a jumper and inserting a short red wire in each case, except for one that just required a jumper to be moved. If you compare it to my original layout you'll get the picture. The Regen connection has now been moved to the correct location.

Thanks again to GP for pointing this out and helping me make this build work the way it should.

I used 2n5485's, bought off Ebay from a seller in the USA. 2n5952 seem very hard to find. BC<XXX> will be BJTs, so no good - FET's are what you need.

BF245B can be used as a sub. They are more common in Europe therefore they should be easy to get. But watch the pinout! You have to turn them 180° if you want to use them.

Here's the revised PCB and PNP, which i now believe to be correct! I had to make the board a bit bigger to correct the errors. If anyone makes up any boards and would like to send me one that would be dandy!

Just a quick question about the bias pot. I managed to match a set of 5952s for this build. $.09ea from Jameco, it "only" took 30 of them to get a set of eight that matched. Vgs for the set ranged from -2.31 to -2.29, a variation of about 3%. None of them measured at less then -2.01 for the whole batch.

Seeing as I will be using a set that is about 40% higher (lower?) in Vgs than what you used for your build, would I be better served using a 250k for the bias pot, rather than the 100k you ended up using, or would it be better to use something like 68k on the ground side of the 100k pot (the R2 on the pot board)? Hmm, looking at the figures on this sheet of paper in front of me, maybe 82k on the ground side with the 68k on the Vref side.

I'm nowhere ready to play with the values yet, just finished drilling the board I etched for this and have just mounted all the sockets. I will think about this more as I get closer to that point. Meanwhile, back to the solder fumes... :horsey:

And before I forget, thanks FrequencyCentral for the work in the artwork and layout, and thanks RG for the original work on the Phase 90 dissection.

Another one finished! Many thanks for sharing these phasers. This was my second attempt at perfboarding and I made fewer mistakes on this one than I did on the Evolution. I paralleled another 10uF cap across C12 to slow it down a bit.
Having built three of your phasers now (Causality 4 Mk I, Evolution and Revolution), I think I'll have to do a Causality 4 Mk II and the Sonic Death Ray 14, once I've ordered some more FETs.
Cheers,
Mark.
