i made two small clones on your layout and none of them are working. sound is pasing trough but no chorus effect. probably same error on both of them.

i'm looking on tonepad schematic and i wonder about diode direction. negative pole on 1n914 i facing Q1 (5087), and on your layout + sign is twords Q1. it's same for D2. maybe i dont know how to read this :D

here's some voltages from transistors

Q1 5087
E 5,51
B 4,67
C ground

q2 (next to 4047)
E 7,25
B 7,86
C 7,9

q3
E 4,95
B 5,49
C 7,92

are potentiometer's 3 2 1 (like on tonepad layout) or 1 2 3?
what's trimmer for?

Hej,

I had a similar problem. Reason was what I tried to mark in the attached file. If you have these tracks on your PCB please cut them, otherwise they can cause a malfunction like you tend to have.

Cheers
Helge

Edit: When I did a second glance on your PCB it seems to me it is indeed the problem. If I don't see it wring you have these traces on your board. Cut them! Then it should work.;)
Edit: I attached a gut pic of my last built.
heh, i allready threw them away! i was pissed after 2 weeks of debugging and they ended up in trash  that indeed could be the problem!
i made new ones from tonepad and they are working flawless!

thanks for this, i'll be making them more in a while

Hi,

dude, what a pitty! I smack my ass and call me Sally, if this wasn't the reason for your problems. You should read more often in the threads you post your debugging probs I suppose.;) At least you got it working *thumps up* but the tonepad pcb would barely fit into a 1950B.;)

Cheers
Helge

thanks Baja 8) .. I etched my board last nite.. wow.. it's got some pretty tight tracks in some spots.. my fat @rse PCB pen struggled (the press'n'peel didn't seem to stick in those tight spots so had to 'touch up' :x ).. I'm not hopeful that my soldering skills will be up to non-bridging, but will have a go over the weekend.. you're a star mate!

I don't know - I cannot see why they would not work though.
Make sure you get the pin outs correct (and the correct NPN or PNP)

For a little confirmation, one or two people in the tonepad build reports for the small clone reported the 2N3904 & 2N3906 working fine :thumbsup

I've made a couple of these, and I just adjusted the trim by ear... have you tried that?

Shouldn't be too hard. The trimmer has just a portion of the sweep where the modulation becomes audible. :)

Cool, now here's another project I'm going to have to build... :)

I like the lushness of the sound of this Small Clone pedal... :)

I wonder if there is a project for the EH Small Stone pedal?,the reason why I'm asking is that I am a fan of Jean Michelle Jarre's music,I have both the Oxygene and Equinoxe albums,I'm planning on building myself at least one, maybe two EMS Synthi/VCS 3 synthesizers once I can get all the circuit layouts for Stripboard done,i want to build these so I can get the sounds Jean gets on those albums,I've probably got alot of work ahead of me... :)
