This is a sweet sounding distortion, low parts count so definitely worth a build.

This pedal was reversed by myself, with the help of an interested party that had access to pictures of an original. He wishes to remain anonymous, and by consequence I have decided to only include the schematic I threw together in DIYLC, and title the thread with a modified version of the original pedal's name.

Image

The board was gooped, and in the pictures I was given, the degooping process had destroyed the writing on two capacitors, so their values are not confirmed. The tone cap's likely value is listed with an asterisk. Some writing was left on the cap, and it appears to indicate .01. It's a subtractive control, and obviously you can adjust it when building your own, so it's value is not so crucial.

The other cap (labeled "???") is probably not significant either. The only writing left on it was an 'A' looking logo, and 1w9, which I don't believe denotes the value. The original is a blue, rectangular, poly film cap. This can be narrowed down through simple substitution, I'm sure.

As for the circuit itself, it's obviously derivative of the RunOffGroove Ruby amplifier.

It uses a JFET mentioned on the ROG ruby page, has a very similar input stage, and uses the same IC. However, the SuperBrunch makes different use of the 386. The tone and volume controls are passive, and are easily removed if desired. In that way, the circuit is good for on-board use, since it has a low parts count and can be boiled down to one control.

Any questions or corrections to the schematic are welcomed. Thanks for looking.

yhanks for the schematic, but there's no reason to hide the name of the pedal. please just tell us what it is so we can name the thread properly.

ok, with some super-sleuthing through some back posts, i've figured out it the sucker punch. now who makes this thing???

the person who provided pics didn't want the pedal identified, but i don't think anyone will care. It's Nick Greer's SuckerPunch Distortion.

What's with all the secrecy?

If you want, you can email me the photos and I'll upload them here. That way nobody will know who did the degooping.

thanks for the welcome, i have a low post count but i've been here for a while. i posted shots of my octron for someone to reverse a long time ago as well. i haven't contributed much here as i've been trying to learn more about amps, but when i see an opportunity to share i give it a shot.

culturejam, i would share the pics myself, but the person providing wanted to keep them out of the public eye. supposedly nick greer knows every pedal he builds like the back of his hand, so the degooper would quickly be discovered. i'll email him and ask if it's alright, and if so i'll post them myself.

After listening to the few samples out there, I think I'm going to drink and watch the Steelers game instead of sniffin' solder tonight. :applause:

i got the o.k. from the owner. here are the pics that are probably the most useful, including the copy of the original layout slapped together with DIYLC, which i used to double check my work and create a schematic.

i thought so too, but i think it's some type of paper. all part of concealing the circuit, i believe.

Hey, the front end of this circuit looks very ROG Fetzer Valve-esque.

sorry about the secrecy before guys. personally i don't understand why people are so intent on keeping this stuff so hush hush. it's not like we can use this stuff to do anything but make noise :D

Bumping this up...
This one looks so easy to make!
Going to give it a go and compare this one to my Purple Plexi build... I suspect this Sucker Punch may be a winner! :applause:
Thanks for the Schemo!
