NPN transistors for big muff build...which ones?

Frequently asked question on transistors: types, substitutions, how to test, use and misuse them.

i decided to put some sockets on my big muff build board as im not too sure which transistors to get
i fort got to order some 2n5088 with my last order from futurelec so i have to try source some trannies locally.
i found some Pn100 (TO-92) which are meant to be drop in replacements for a whole heap of trannies?

i also have a heap of BC108/109

seeking some info or thoughts from muff build conniesiurs (inc muff variants like the skreddy mayo, devi hyperion etc) on what transistors sound "good" and are also easily available

i havent wired up my build yet (waiting for the enclosure to dry) so cant test the pn100s yet

Good idea with the sockets, I have that in my Big muffs too, my favorite right now, is a big muff with 2N2222 (which actually is a switching transistor) in the input part, and the rest is BC184's. That gives (in my BM) a heck of a lot of smooth buzzing sustain.
But I guess this is a personal thing, go and try all NPN transistors you can find, doesn't have to be specific good for audio curves, you might (or might not) get surprised, like I did with the 2N2222.

I'm not a BMP expert but I'm using any type with hfe above 500 for first 3 stages and something around 400 for Q4 with best results. BC184 are is what DAM used in Ramhead's, right?
