Very nice Dirk, thanks alot. Look at that "Bite" control, looks just like the "voice" control on the Zendrive :)

The bite pot is nothing but a plain copy of the KORG OVD-1 tone control and the rest is a mid Gainster clone.

I never liked the 4 knob. I have had a few 3 knobbers to me its close to perfect. I am also a gainster fan.

I want so badly to mod my 3 knobber and make it perfect.

I love the clarity and I love it as a boost and light OD. Some tweaks and it could be perfect.

It would be nice to tweak it to have less gain, less harsh highs, and a better gain structure like the gainster. The gainster you can do rhythms the snapper isn't so great in this regard.

thoughts anyone

I need help from one of the electronics guru's. Read my post above regarding modifying my 3 knob red snapper. Cheers!

Is that the correct 3 knob schemtic I could have sworn mine had a different chip? Also some values seem a bit different than I remember. The new 4 knob sounds like garbage in comparison.

The KIA 4558 was used in the the Blue Collar (I never ssen anything else in the Collar) and it seems that 4558 from different manufactures are used now. KIA and JRC are expensive and hard to get.

IMHO the IC is a crucial part. I have KIA 4558 and JRC 072BD chips and they sound complete different. The KIA sounds much more open and grittier than for ex. a JRC4558D.

My chip has no markings.
Are you saying JHS that the 3 knob
schematic above is correct except
for the IC?

I hacked into my red snapper now a few times

I would like to build the best version of the 3 knob snapper with the proper IC.

Any changes or suggestions?

I recommend to change the IC for a JRC 072BD and to swap the 33k/1n for a 22k/2,2n combination.

Take out the diodes, and you'll have more of a boost type thing. I run mine with the gain real low anyway.

Did anyone ever do a layout for the 4-knob version?

Couldn't you just put a pot after the diodes to cancel their influence on the sound ?
This way there would be a cleaner boost as well as the regular grittier sound possible.

What value would be suitable ?

Size of board: 54mm x 30mm wide.

The layout matched with the schematic as in RedSnapper_SCM.png which is a redrawn from Hendrik's schematic.

If you want a cleaner boost from the snapper add more diodes in series or drop them completely.
A pot or R in series with the diodes will produce more compression and a fuzz type sound (the Harmonics pot in the Barber DD works like this).
