I know the SMD ICs are only about half the size and I already attempted to tweak at an 8 pin socket to try and "spider" the legs inwards but that just won't cut the mustard.
IS there a "converter" socket of sorts that allows using standard 8 pin ICs onto an SMD board?
always check google.................and ebay...........try "smd adapter" in ebay and you get this :

Like these?

Though these are for large SMD pads... I don't think that you can find a suitable adapter for mini-SMD chips...

Firstly, you want to figure the package of the device you would like to replace. Most of the SM op-amps used today are in SO, SOIC, or TSSOP packages, but a lot of the manufacturers use the SOIC (at least in a lot of the SM designs i've come across).

Once you figure that out, you'll want a DIP (8-pin, 14-pin?) socket to the appropriate SM device foot-print of the same pin count. Eg. DIP8 socket to SOIC8 adapter. Here are some great adapters:

Remember, these adapters will be awkwardly tall, you should take the height into account with the PCB installed in the pedal (don't forget the re-placement op-amp installed in the adapter adds height too).

Another issue here is getting the old device off. You have to heat up all the pins at once or cut them individually with needle nose pliers and use an iron to get each left-over leg off. If the footprint in the PCB is an SOIC, the adapter will be easy enough to hand solder at that density.

Good luck!
