This is still a work in progress, but it's nearly done and it's verified on the breadboard. It's a simple A/B/Y splitter with a transformer-isolated output. What makes it different is that all the switching is done electronically. The A/B/Y selection is done with simple momentary footswitches that are controlling a flip-flop circuit. The flip-flop then controls a CD4053 to do the actual signal switching. It's all very 70's tech.
It also includes a switch to reverse the polarity of the isolated out - a very useful feature in some situations where you're mixing mismatched amps.

Here's what I have done so far:

You see, the pcb design I've done is 2-sided. It seems like it needs to be for it to be able to fit into this space without requiring a ton of jumpers. I was able to make this board with press n' peel, so you shouldn't consider it an impossible task to do yourself. The trick is to be sure it's well-aligned along two of the edges, and it should turn out fine. This layout is designed to fit into a 1590BB size box.

I'll upload the schematic and artwork after I get it boxed-up and have the final thing verified.

2 sides? why didn't you just surface mount all the parts? despicable!

Well, I did use a bunch of surface mount resistors... But I didn't want to mess with an SMD 4053 because I wanted it be in a socket because those sometimes die and need replaced.

Nice looking work, Soulsonic. Inspiring to see someone pull off a DIY 2-sided layout, so now I'll have to try it. Thanks!

Thanks guys. I will try to get this finished soon so I can have the circuit fully verified, and then I'll post it up. I'm definitely going to draw up a new layout for sharing, because this one doesn't center correctly in the box... I added something and forgot to shift the layout, so the LEDs are slightly off center. The new layout will not have the jacks on board, so you will have more freedom with how to mount it in the box. It was really hard to get the box drilled so that everything lines up right.

Finally got this thing working right today.
Image
I finished last weekend, but something was wrong with it... would pop really bad when switching channels. Picked it back up today and found the problem - a small error in the circuit board layout. It was easily fixed and it works perfectly now.
Here's the guts:
Image
I was careless with the spacing of the footswitches and now I can't fit a battery in there! :slap:
You'll probably notice things on the front panel are all off-center as well... this pcb layout is definitely off. I'm going to scrap it and draw a completely new one. Schematic is incoming... just have to get it drawn up.
:D

Very nice soulsonic.

The footswitches look similar to these these.

They look flushed to the surface... how are they compared the standard footswitches?

The closest approximation I could find on a similar "vandal resistant switch" was this. http://www.bulgin.co.uk/Products/Switches/Domed.html Their MP0037/3 looks pretty decent.

There are a lot of them that are lighted too, but most of the lit top ones aren't domed enough to stomp on.

Also, most of the vandal resistant switches I have seen are only momentary, so you'd need to use relays with them.

Cool!
I'm planning on doing the whole flipflop+mux AB box myself as well, but I was wondering: what are transformer isolated outputs, yadayadayada?
