"Superheated SHO" - asbestos gloves warning!

While messing with the basic SHO topology for another project another project I decided to add a switchable SSRP section lifted from the BSIAB. The resulting output signal is what I can only describe as superheated. Best to don your trusty asbestos gloves before laying down some uber hot licks and riffs into a tube amp with this sucker...........

I actually prefer this version though, as it doesn't crackle. :icon_biggrin:

Interesting... It reminds me Jack Orman's mini-booster with a BS170 instead of a Q2.

How would you describe the superheated setting? Mild/Heavy Distortion, overdrive...

Yeah - I invented the mini-booster didn't I? Go me! :slap:

The superheated mode just gives more gain

even though you did just reinvent the MB, it's a cool switching option that could be used for a number of effects including the BSIAB. might be fun to mess around with it some more.

No - I invented it. Jack obviously stole it off me at some time in the past - I hate it when that happens - I know I talk in my sleep, maybe my GF told him about it. Anyway, yes you're right it's great fun to mess about with.

First off, Rick, thanks for the circuit. It looks interesting, to say the least.

Next, skipping over the potential Jack/Rick's GF controversy, I wanted to inquire as to the theory behind the BS170 Drain biasing of the SH-SHO. I mocked up a quick SPICE model of the circuit, wanting to see what the voltage changes were at the Drain of the BS170. (Unfortunately, the crappy SPICE tool I used didn't have BS170 or 2N5457 in its library, so I modeled with IRF250s.)

Using the DMM tool, I measured DC voltage at the Drain of the BS170. At lowest-gain settings on the 5K pot (95%), voltages were about 8.2V w/HOT side and 7.6V w/SUPERHEATED. At mid-travel (50%), voltages were about 8.6V w/HOT and 8.4V w/SUPERHEATED. At highest-gain settings(5%), voltages were about 8.7V w/HOT side and 8.6V w/SUPERHEATED.

I was curious as to the design theory that contributes to the increased gain from the SUPERHEATED option. It appears to reduce BS170 Drain voltage at low-gain settings, but almost-mirror the voltages from the HOT option at higher-gain settings. I myself do not have an explanation for why this causes the gain increase from HOT to SUPERHEATED, so I was hoping you might fill in the gaps in my understanding. (Pretty please, with single-malt scotch and Mullard tubes sprinkled on top. :) )

Thanks in advance.

Hi heaters!
Did anybody try the "superheated"-mod in the Box of Metal or the Box of Rock?
Or does anyone think, this could be a good idea?

Greetings,
Björn

A forum member asked me for a stripboard layout for the add-on to a stock SHO:

That was me Freq'. Total awesome sauce. Thanks so much.

I'm gonna make it tonight or tomorrow. Quick question though . . .

The orange wire coming from tab 2 on S1.
Can it be soldered to the B4 spot on the Excellent Stiffy layout or do I have to solder to C6, right on the Drain?

Yeah, remove R3 (just snip it off) from the Excellent Stiffy and hook up the orange wire of the Heater anywhere along the 'B' track. Then you'll have an Excellent Superhot Stiffy....... :applause:

There she is.
I don't have any 1M resistors so I'll have to wait until tomorrow to actually plug it in and test.

I asked my kids for some help with the final enclousre design graphic. So far I have a robot, a rainbow and red and black tripes like caution tape...I think I'll stear them towards a mushroom cloud :hmmm:

WOOT! to all those vets out there, used the Memorial Day news paper with the Honor Guard on the front page. Thank you one and all for fighting for what we at home cannot see, hear or feel. Thank you vets, each and every one.

Finished it this morning. I was at Radio Shacks door before they opened.
Ummm, I don'[t know a lot about DIY effects or guitar effects to boot, but I know that when I have my crappy little Crate practice amp at Vol 5, my SHO at Vol 5 and then I flip the switch for the 'Superheated SHO' . . . my pants get tight.

that design was first used with tubes,so you could try to make mosfet/minitube configuration...... :hmmm:
