Hi I just made a smd layout for the Fuzz Face. I thought I'll call it a Nano Face, the name describe the project quite well. There are two versions of PCB with electrolytics in smd and with the through hole ones too. PCB dimensions are: 19,5mmx18mm. :D Not verified yet, I will verify this today. Ok, here are the files:

EDIT: I'm not 100% sure about pinout of the transistors so I will make a second version with swapped collector and emitter so it can almost any transistor can be used.

Fantastic! Looks great MWichni! :applause:

Less than 2cm x 2cm board - amazing!

It looks very fiddly to solder SMDs using a standard soldering iron & tweezers - but with a small circuit like this I'm guessing not too wearisome? :block: And I guess to make sure the bias is near enough correct you'd need to measure your transistors beforehand (I'm assuming you can with SMD parts?) - and perhaps take hfe & resistor values from a practice circuit you've made from normal sized parts?

Here is layout with the swapped collector and emitter (size of the board is the same as the earlier one):

Hi and thanks johnnyg! I will use standard values for the fuzz face: 8,2k, 33k, 100k, 470ohm resistors and BC548C transistors all smd and see what it sounds like. :)

Regards,
Mariusz.

moved to ready to build section- assuming the layout is correct.

cool project! smd resistors and IC's are something that i definitely want to get going in the future.

Cool Mariusz - thanks for all the work you've put into this so far!

I like your approach! :thumbsup It's the same as that of Dallas Arbiter and Dunlop after all! :D I'm looking forward to seeing your circuit if you get the chance to finish it and post it 8)

Thanks johnny, I'm working on it. Maybe it'll be finished today. BTW it seems that second version of the pcb is correct.

Okay guys v2 of the layout is verified. Works perfectly! :D Parts used: BC848 (1L code, SOT23 package) equivalent of BC548C, 470ohm, 8,2k, 33k and 100k resistors used in 1206 package, 100nF as output cap also 1206 package. Electrolytics are normal sized because I don't have smd ones on hand. I would like to have some germanium smd trannies. Some crappy pictures from my phone camera, enjoy!

Great Mariusz - and impressive as it must be fiddly to solder those tiny parts into place. The shots don't convey how tiny the board must really be! :thumbsup

It's really cool to think how many different silicon fuzzes and or boosters you could fit into one enclosure if they were built in this method - one fairly large enclosure could give you all kinds of options if you could figure out a good way of switching between them :D I wish I had the knowledge and skills to devise such a pedal :block:

Hi johnny, I will make a comparison photo tommorow. I'll compare my Nano Face to original Fuzz Face pcb. But for now you can be sure that it is really small. Oh, and yes soldering those tiny parts is quite hard, I never done that before but I think it came out pretty good. BTW I desoldered that components earlier from pcb's that I had.

So maybe we should make a layout for a Big Muff as a next project? INSANE OF THE NANO-SCALE! :D
One more thing, I noticed that the Nano Face is very quiet.

Regards,
Mariusz.

Yeah looks good Mariusz - did you use tweezers to hold those tiny parts in place? And a magnifying glass I guess is a must. I've thrown away some pcbs with smds on them when I've pulled apart broken electronic things in the hope of finding nice parts - it never occurred to me to try and collect the smds, I can't imagine they're easy to remove!

As for the Little Big Nano Muff - cool idea, though lots of components so maybe very fiddly?

You could call it the Teeny Muff... or maybe best not! :D :blackeye

Edit - I should probably add, for those whom English is not your first language, that 'teeny' is an informal variant of tiny... just in case you've got a prurient mind :P

First of all thanks for the kind words guys.
Johnnyg - I used some kind of tweezers, I'll make a photo of them so you can see exactly what it was. I doesn't need a magnifying glass somehow my eyes was enough. :D

As for the Big Muff I'll rather call it Nano Big Muff, it should be quite a lot fun with smd layout for BM. Maybe I will do a Muff project in a couple of days (or maybe some other kind person could make a layout? :)), unfortunately don't have much time right now.
Incorrect value, should be 10nF

bitchin layout
I know it should be 10nF, but I just don't have the right value on hand right now. But there is now big difference in sound at all. I've made a few days ago Fuzz Face on original pcb and they sound nearly the same.

Regards,
Mariusz.

Now this would be something to stick in a custom strat or so - anywhere you go
you can plug in and have your fuzz face on board :) Imagine you combined it with
a compressor, that would make a direct plug-in all-you-can-eat guitar :)

Specifically because you could have your DI in the guitar right along with it,
and possibly even a THAT driver or so that now you have a guitar that outputs
normal signal plus floating balanced for all the long transmission lines@+4dBu

sorry, for cheap P.R., but this is my old big muff and phase90 PCBs

FF could be done without SMD ;) and twice shorter, cause 1206 SMD has no economy of space, comparing to vertical mounted resistors

if fuzz is manipulated to nano-scale...

...does change in physics make it a whammy? :D

(philosoraptor picture omitted)

great work! i'd love to try this sometime for my multifx concept.

Maybe 1206 isn't much economy if we are talking about space, but this is my first SMD project and I wanted a bigger chance to solder everything properly. BTW I don't have right now right type of soldering iron to make smaller SMD layouts.

Mariusz.
