According their forum, it's based off of the Shin-ei fuzz? Was wondering if anyone knew more about it, or better yet, were able to whip up a schem of it. I guess it uses OC76 and CV7003 germs too, but info on this thing is hard to find--especially since I guess they aren't it readily available outside Japan yet. [smilie=a_whyme.gif]

I've loved every pedal Dave has released so far, and I've always had a thing for the Shin-ei, so any input cracking this nut would be great!

Shin-ei? As in the companion? As far as I can tell from the layout shown on the D*A*M site of the box and the name, it's a Germanium Mosrite Fuzzrite.

That's what I thought too, but looking at some of the threads on the site, I saw a lot of folks making reference to it as a Shin-ei Companion.

I know they have an underside shot of the board, but no componentside shot. Here's a link to that shot (sorry, been using my phone as the only source of Internet connection for over a month now):

Everyone in that thread is calling it a Fuzzrite except the first poster.

"Nice! Are there any soundclips of the Fuzzrong? I just built a germanium fuzzrite and wanted to listen to how it SHOULD sound."

"I don't have a standard rong to compare it to, but the only other germ Fuzzrite I have is one of Brad's and they're blow for blow identical"

"btw, the F'rong does stack up well to my '67 Ge F'rite, which i think is the best fuzz i've ever played."

Ironic that the version everyone remembers was the silicon version, yet a few boutique builders slap a few hundred dollar price tag on a germanium version and suddenly that's the version everyone wants. The germanium version was a blip on the radar. There were many that disputed it's very existence until recently.

I had a germanium one. It went in the trash about 30 years ago. It was a piece of junk, sounded terrible, and wasn't even worth saving for the case it came in! I also have two silicon ones, (one original, and one clone) and they sound amazing!

Hmm. Thought I posted a reply earlier, but I guess I never submitted it.

Well, looks like there is a componentside shot of the guts in the forum, but no idea how helpful it actually is:

hey mictester, mind elaborating more on your experience with the GE and/or why it was so bad compared to the Si version?

And yes, it apears to be the Mosrite Fuzzrite, and not the Shin-ei Companion. Sorry for the confusion--Greg was [fuzz]rite.

Actually it was Scruffie.

I listened to a few clips on YouTube, and I have to say I didn't get too excited.

Exact on to a Germanium Fuzzrite. No need to draw any new schematics.

The original germanium one was weak sounding, and gated quite badly - it was probably wrongly biased - and it hissed quite a lot, making it useless for recording. It just sounded really nasty.

The silicon ones (I had an original, and I built dozens of clones) sounded amazing. They had lots of sustain, and could get that nasal sound that we all used to love! They didn't hiss too much, and made massively nasty intermodulation sounds when you wanted them to!

For reference, probably one reason people get the Fuzzrite and Shin-Ei FY-2 Companion Fuzz crossed is how the builds can sometimes be done with the same PCB, like this:

Just thought it was worth mentioning.
