Switching effect on/off

It depends how you want to switch and what exactly you want to switch.
Most effects use a 3PDT footswitch.
The extra set of contacts is used for the LED indicator.
You can get away with a 2PDT if you use a few extra components.. search "Millenium Bypass".

I just want my guitar signal to be affected when it's on and not be affected when it's off. I don't want/need an led or anything like that. In this case, which type of switch should I use?

That is a perfectly acceptable way. there is an alternative with a ground if you want it.
